Essay Editing and Advising

At Scholar’s Station we believe that every student is a unique and talented individual. The college application essay is an opportunity for students to bring life and personality to the one-dimensional numbers, scores, and statistics and differentiate themselves from the masses of applicants.

We know that the essay can also be a source of much anxiety and confusion for students and we hope our support and expertise will alleviate some of the stress and give students an edge during review. The process of crafting a powerful admissions essay shouldn’t be painful. With the support of an expert absorbing some of the anxiety and pressure, the process can get back to what it should be—an opportunity for self-discovery and self-expression that, when done well, communicates the student’s individuality and convinces an admissions officer of the student’s unique and valuable contribution to an academic community.

Why should I use the Scholar’s Station remote editing services?
Our remote service, conducted over the internet and by phone, extends our editor support nation-wide and even to international clients. Unlike our in-home service, which helps clients write their essays from scratch, this remote service is best for clients who already have working drafts of their essays. Our service differs from others in that our professional editors are also trained and experienced college admissions advisors. Since we understand the application process inside-and-out, our editors help clients perfect not just the best, but the most strategic essay possible for their application. We collect as much supplemental data about our clients as possible in order to better assess the essay’s role in their application. We find that this helps us serve all of our clients more effectively and offers more comprehensive support.

We ensure that your essay is:

  • CONCISE: Since you are given a limited word count, we make sure each word is carefully chosen and each sentence powerfully improves the essay. We also help you eliminate redundancies and wordy language to keep your essay within the recommended word limits.
  • COHERENT: We check the essay’s readability and help improve the flow of content to ensure that there is a logical progression of information. Admissions officers don’t have time to bother with essays that are difficult to get through. We help you take advantage of stylistic tools, transitions, and structural elements to make your essay a cohesive and coherent unit.
  • GRAMMATICALLY AND MECHANICALLY SOUND: Simple errors are distracting and greatly detract from the overall impact of the essay. We correct all grammatical, mechanical, and spelling errors in the essay and check for misused language and homonyms, common punctuation errors, and sentence fragments.
  • WELL STRUCTURED AND ORGANIZED: We check to make sure that all of your topic sentences support the main idea and are ordered in the most effective manner. We help reorder sentences and paragraphs as needed to ensure that the essay is well organized. We make sure that all of your paragraphs push forward toward your conclusion and support the main idea of the essay and the overall message. We also make sure that the essay is in the most effective format for a hasty read-through by the admissions officers.
  • MEMORABLE: Admissions officers only spend a few minutes reading the essay. This is a short amount of time to make an impression. You want your essay to stand out from the stacks of other applicants’ files and leave a lasting impression on the readers.
  • POWERFUL: We make sure that your essay has not only substance, but significance – it says something important. We want to ensure that it communicates a depth of thought and feeling.
  • ILLUSTRATIVE: Abstract statements don’t help admissions officers get to know you. We make sure that your essay is packed with personal details, examples, and experiences to help admissions officers get the full picture of who you are. Vivid descriptions also improve the reader’s comprehension and enjoyment.
  • HONEST AND AUTHENTIC: It is also important to make sure that the essay is sincere and true to the student’s own experience. The admissions officers want to know who you are and want to feel that you are confident and comfortable in your own skin.
  • IN THE STUDENT’S ORIGINAL VOICE: Admissions officers do not expect you to sound like a Pulitzer Prize-winning author. They expect you to be yourself and give them a sense of who you are. We help preserve your unique voice and personality, while improving the technical elements of the essay. Eliminating distracting mistakes actually allows your unique voice and personality to come through that much more effectively.
  • ACURATE AND CONSISTENT: We check that all of the details are consistent within the essay and with the rest of the application and that the essay accurately reflects you.
  • ENGAGING: Your opening paragraph is your first impression on the reader and, like all first impressions, it is important to make it a positive one. You want your first sentences to grab even the most frazzled reader’s attention. An engaging narrative goes a long way, ensuring that the admissions officer reads every word. The conclusion is equally important; rather than just be a summary, the conclusion has the power to leave a positive and lasting impression. We edit your essay to make sure that all of the elements are dynamic and engaging.
  • INTERESTING, INDIVIDUAL, AND UNIQUE: The essay provides an opportunity for students to celebrate who they are and convince the admissions committee that they would make a unique and valuable addition to schools’ academic communities. Every student has the potential to add a great deal to the vitality of a college campus; we make sure that all of our clients find that potential within themselves and communicate it in their essay.

What should I expect?
While we will not write or rewrite essays for students, we mark most of our recommendations directly on the manuscript and then explain them in further detail in the written response that accompanies the returned essay. All corrections for grammar, mechanics, spelling, and word choice are made directly in the manuscript. We edit using Microsoft Word’s Track Changes feature (a standard for most publishers and editors doing this level of editing). The feature allows students to see editors’ notes directly on the manuscript and select which corrections they want to accept or reject. An explanation of how to use this feature of Microsoft Word will also accompany the returned essay and written response.

How do I begin?
To get started, take a look at our remote editing packages and select the service that best meets your needs. If you don’t find what you are looking for, or have any questions about our services, please contact our editors. Once you decide on a package, proceed to our essay submission page. From there you can submit your essay draft and relevant contact information, select your package and desired turnaround time, and receive a preliminary price quote. Our staff responds to submissions within 24 hours to confirm the quoted price, discuss any further instructions you may have for your editor, and establish a billing account. Our editors then spend hours perfecting your essays and preparing them for submission. They also draft a reader response that details the editor’s overall impression of the essay, outlines the essay’s strengths, explains specific changes the editor made to the manuscript, and offers additional recommendations. Most of our services promise a 48 hour turnaround time on submitted essays (24-hour rush service is also available for students with rapidly approaching deadlines), however, we also offer a Platinum Package for clients who anticipate they will want more editor interaction and two complete edits of their essay while they work on it.
